Backgammon-News
In this section you'll find a lot of informations about Backgammon - especial Internet-Backgammon und Gnu & Co.
All I write here is my personal meaning, - I do not want to create another forum because all forums after a while grow and grow and become total confusing. If you want to comment an artikel please do it byusing my blog. Thank you!
I do start with a general Question:
"Can we trust random-generators in computer.backgammon?"
Can Random-Generators be cheating?
Hello to all Backgammonsplayers on this Planet.
No doubt: Internetbackgammon has taken place in our world. The good old times will NOT return! There is a lot to say about this and I will do so in the next future. This should not become a forum for complaints, but a forum fighting for more correctness, basing of the idea that a fair internet-server for backgammon is a need which could make much better business than a cheating one. All we need is new solutions for well-knows problems i will descibe in this section of my webpage.
If you want to give a comment please do so in my blog. Thank you!

Can Random-Generators be cheating?
This is a provocative question and my answer to this question is "yes, they can".
Please note: I stated "They can!", - in did not state "They do!"
I do play backgammon long time myself and I do know a lot about hard-luck-stories which every backgammonplayer can tell about. To stand this hard-luck-times is one of the qualifications a godd Players does need to survive.
The position up here shows in a picture came up recently. Brown (me) did hit in a well-timed backgame, after long struggeling I got a closed board against one opponents checker on the bar. It happened in a one-point-round in a tournament, that is why I could not double my opponent out from this game. The only winnig-chance für my oponent was a 6+6 from the bar immediately, followed by another doublette very soon. The chance, this event will happen, is <1 out from 36>.
If this does happen, it is not extreme luck, but one possibillity which will happen all 36 times (on the long run) in situations like this. No good player will complain, if this will happen two or three times in one week. But if this does happen in more than 30 per cent of such cases, players get into doubt about the random-generator.
This situaton came up on my favorite BG-Server <GammonEmpire> which does have the potential to become an ideal Numer One.

About Gnu & Co
In my meaning, Gnu is totally overrated - especial the roll-outs. This, because the programm is playing against himself in all roll outs. This leads to bad results, because Gnu cannot be creative. The programm is very good, but alrt least it is only a stupid machine.
Gnu can be very helpfull for those who want to learn the game, but it is silly custom to think someone could become a good player by using a robot to win an online tournament.
The only way to stop this bad behavier isto restrict the time-line, which is easy to do. Es 15 second thinking time plus a additional global thinking-time of 30 seconds instead of 90 seconds would be OK.
I am in the process of discussing this subject with the support represantives of GameDuell. This not in matter of complaning but to animate them to change this Website to a better one.
Please read my letters in the section <GammonEmpire>.
About the character of the game
Backgammon is not Chess - and it should not be played like chess.
The character of BG is to be a fast game. All this roll-out-shit does not lead to skill and fun in the game. There has been a time when Backgammin was and in-Game in Germany. Everybody seemed to be interested in the game and you could see a lot of people play BG in the coffe-shops. Tournaments where going well until the chessplayers (is was one of them) discovered the possibillities of this game. From this point, it has been nearly impossoble to run a tournament on one weekend because the chessplayers speeded the games down by thinking long time of easy mooves like 3+1 as an opening-roll.
I do not agree with the argument that every situation in the game should be analyzed over and over. Understanding of the general technik and taktik of the game, quick analyzing and quick thinking - this is what makes Backgammon to be an intellectual arm wrestling.
That's how it should be.
There will be happen mistakes while quick playing - of course.
Don't worry about that - there will be mistakes on your side - there will be mistakes on your opponents side, - on the long run this will compensate.
Who will loose this game?
I (as brown) did not worry about beeing hit on 24Pt. But since some time my opponent do have no difficulty to roll in the first time with the ideal roll 6+1. The chance for this to happen is <2 out from 36>.
This did happen today in the fift round of a tournament. I was dancing on the bar, even the chance to play in was <27 out of 36>.
Again: I do know this can happen, but it did happen to often recently.
I do not say GammonEmpire ist manipulating the dices, but I am in doubt. Iwould like to get a guaranty for correct working of the random generator which should be controlled by a independent organisation.
